Transparency

The credibility of climate policies and implementation actions ultimately depends on a credible transparency system that can assess and report on their effectiveness.
Transparency at the national level is critical to building trust in the multilateral climate regime, while credible data and reporting informs on what does and does not deliver the expected results.

UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre supports tracking and reporting for climate accountability and works to:

  • establish and operationalizing transparency and monitoring frameworks
  • improve the quality and reliability of climate-related data
  • develop metrics, datasets, and tools for improved tracking and assessment of climate results.

With the increasing political focus on the role of Non-State Actors in the global climate efforts, it is critical to ensure that the many pledges coming from cities, industries, finance institutions, and others are credible and subject to transparent MRV processes. Processes that ideally over time should be integrated into national NDC processes without losing the momentum coming from the joint pledging processes.
The UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre works through several activities to ensure this, and is expanding its efforts.

Building on the existing CDM Pipeline, NAMA and NDC databases the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre is developing an ‘Article 6 and Voluntary Carbon Market Pipeline Analysis and Database’. A science-based database, providing independent data and analysis, made publicly available in a user-friendly format.
