CDM/JI Pipeline Analysis and Database

The Kyoto Protocol established some cooperative mechanisms designed to help developed countries to meet their greenhouse gas emission targets by achieving emission reduction at lower costs in other countries.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) allows industrialised countries to claim credits for emission reductions from projects in developing countries. It is a condition that the projects assist developing countries in achieving sustainable development. All the Pipelines, which can be downloaded from www.cdmpipeline.org site, have been updated every month since the mechanism started to be active in 2007. UNEP DTU Partnership has provided capacity building on CDM to many developing countries.

It is not yet known what will happen to these projects, when the new mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement start in 2020.

A large spreadsheet (“CDM Pipeline Overview”) can be downloaded from this site that contains all the 12000 CDM projects that have been submitted. This Excel workbook contains 20 sheets that describe the main content of the CDM projects: Title, host country, region, buyer and buyer country, methodology used, expected emission reduction, emission reduction credits issued, credit start date, investment, number of project per country, number of project by type, and a lot more.

Another spreadsheet (“CDM States and Provinces”) can be downloaded from this site. It shows the CDM project distribution within host countries by region and type.

Another spreadsheet (“PoA Pipeline Overview”) can be downloaded from this site that contains all the 400 PoAs and the 2300 CPAs that have been submitted. A Programme of Activities (PoA) is a voluntary coordinated action by a private or public entity which implements a policy/measure or stated goal via an unlimited number of CDM Program Activities (CPAs).

Joint Implementation (JI) allowed industrialised countries to claim credit for emission reductions from projects in other industrialised countries.

A spreadsheet (“JI Pipeline Overview”) can be downloaded from this site that contains all the 800 JI projects that have been submitted. This Excel workbook contains 8 sheets that describe the main content of the JI projects – like for the CDM Pipeline. New JI projects have not been submitted since 2012, where the first commitment of the Kyoto Protocol ended.

Since the beginning this sites have had several thousand visitors every month, and about 1200 phone calls and e-mails concerning all the analysis on the site. Much of the analysis is used on the CDM web-site for the UNFCCC.
