Launch of Emissions Reduction Profiles

July 2, 2013

UNEP Risø Centre is launching a synthesized assessment of the emissions reduction potential in 15 countries, which so far have been less involved in international emissions reduction activities. The synthesis report and the 15 supporting emissions reduction profiles provide a total estimate of reduction potential in all economic sectors using a multitude of information sources.

The profiles are meant to serve as a useful tool for prioritizing national emissions reduction efforts, both in relation to CDM development and for development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions. Based generally on CDM methodologies, the estimates include wider reduction potential as well, such as reduction of deforestation which emerges as the key emissions reduction option in most of the countries.

The countries covered by the emissions reduction profiles are Angola, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sao Tomé & Principe, Senegal, Belize, Fiji, Haiti, Myanmar, and Trinidad & Tobago.

The profiles have been developed with the support of the UNFCCC Secretariat and the European Commission under the ACP-MEA programme. They are being launched as an electronic document only, with the purpose of inviting comments, refinements, revisions and additions.
