Multiple benefits of energy efficiency
Improving energy efficiency and resource efficiency are some of the key solutions for low carbon and sustainable development.
It can bring multiple benefits, such as enhancing the sustainability of the energy system, supporting strategic objectives for economic and social development, promoting environmental goals and increasing public prosperity.
In Mozambique, it is estimated that public energy efficiency initiatives can help reduce the annual electricity consumption by at least 5.8 percent in 2030 and according to U4E, Mozambique can save electricity worth 8.8 million US dollars every year just on lighting appliances and equipment if the best available technologies are adopted.
Boosting energy access and quality of service
Contributing to the energy transition is the state-owned enterprise Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), which has set out an ambitious plan to increase access to electricity for the general public and improve the quality of services rendered to consumers.
EDM works to build infrastructure for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, including energy efficiency improvement.
Through a new cooperation agreement with the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency, this partnership will help train utility’s officials and staff in the use of energy saving assessment tools and practical issues related to public energy efficiency projects.
Discovering potentials
Focusing on electricity, the collaboration will assess the feasibility of implementing energy efficiency programs in public buildings, replacing less efficient equipment and systems, as well as replacing current street lighting with energy saving LED solutions.
Another strategic area of intervention for the partnership is energy efficiency in the water supply systems, which holds the potential to reduce energy consumption and save water, by introducing energy efficient motors, pumps and other equipment.
After assessing the energy saving potentials, the partnership will then provide the support needed to move into investment and implementation of public energy efficiency initiatives across the country.
